Paediatric Physiotherapy

Paediatric physiotherapy is a specialized branch of healthcare dedicated to assessing, diagnosing, and treating movement and physical function issues in infants, children, and adolescents (typically from birth to age 19).

It is distinct from adult physiotherapy because it accounts for the unique and dynamic stages of child development, growth, and the specific conditions that affect growing bodies.

The main goal of paediatric physiotherapy is to help children achieve their optimal physical potential, promote independence, and facilitate their active participation in daily activities at home, school, and in the community. This is achieved by:

    •  Improving gross motor skills (e.g., crawling, walking, jumping).
    • Enhancing muscle strength, balance, coordination, and posture.
    • Increasing range of motion and flexibility to prevent stiffness or contractures.
    • Managing pain and discomfort associated with injuries or chronic conditions.
    • Providing education and support to families and caregivers to ensure exercises are carried over into daily routines.

Paediatric physiotherapy requires, physiotherapists to utilize specialized knowledge to treat a wide range of conditions, including:

    • Neurological conditions: Cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injuries.
    • Developmental delays: Difficulties in reaching motor milestones like rolling, sitting, or walking at the expected age.
    • Musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions: Congenital limb deficiencies, torticollis (tilted head due to tight neck muscles), scoliosis (spine curvature), fractures, and sports injuries.
    •  Cardio-pulmonary disorders: Conditions such as cystic fibrosis and asthma.
